Curriculum vitae
Matthew Currier
Software eclecticist. Engineering leader in industrial automation; controls, web, cloud, and embedded developer; former oilfield directional driller. Texas, USA.
Summary
I have been using computers since I watched my dad solder together a Zenith H89 CP/M machine when I was four. My first programming experience was a Multiplan spreadsheet; after that I graduated to BASIC, then C and Pascal, and onward.
Since then I have worked on personal, commercial, and industrial systems from electronics to firmware, software, databases, and cloud services. I was an oilfield directional drilling service hand for nearly ten years. I read and write music, books, and code. Father of five, husband of one. My true passion is to create and to help others do what they were made to do.

2017 – 2019 Waller, TX
Controls and software engineer Premier Coil Solutions
- Developed advanced PLC automated control systems and the standards behind them.
- Created automation-controller function libraries for command-request processing, task queuing, sequencing, limit and tolerance evaluation, I/O processing, and other low-level functionality.
- Built hardware-in-the-loop machine simulators (Siemens, Wago, and PC libraries with interactive simulations) for testing controller logic off the machine.
- Wrote and implemented software design specifications.
- Designed SCADA software for coiled-tubing units, drilling-fluid pump units, and nitrogen pumping units, including instrument specification, historical trending, and automated, minimalist controls.
2014 – 2017
Controls and software engineer Aker Solutions → MHWirth → AFGlobal
- Developed advanced PLC automated control systems and standards, with the same controller function libraries and hardware-in-the-loop simulators described above.
- Assisted in creating a PLC-based multiplex system for subsea distributed control, covering direct-hydraulic, remote-hydraulic, and mechanical systems.
- Worked closely with other engineering disciplines to determine functional design specifications and write definition documentation.
- Implemented controller logic, network topology, and the HMI framework.
- Worked on the control system for robotic drilling-rig machinery and on an automated drilling safety-manifold system for managed-pressure operations.
- Designed SCADA software for land and offshore drilling rigs, including instrument specification, historical trending, and automated controls.
2009 – 2015
Web developer Paragon Web Solutions
- Designed and implemented database schemas, domain-specific data formats and transfer specs, user-interface templating, and feedback logging and modeling; worked with clients to codify requirements and report on meeting them.
- Built a charter-school web application covering learning plans, family records, the public website, hourly logging, calendars, expense tracking, grading, and transcripts, with daily input from subject-matter experts to guarantee regulatory compliance. It generated reports for administrators, families, and facilitators and included a document-management system with scanned documents and electronic signing.
- Assisted in architecting a document-control system for a network of hospitals: the database schema and file system for change tracking and storage, and the interface for uploading, downloading, and revising documents.
- Various web applications for internal and external clients, including e-commerce, content management, and data-visualization tools.
2005 – 2013
Directional drilling Scientific Drilling
- MWD electronics assembly and configuration, including survey and logging tools transmitting over drilling fluid and EM media.
- Wrote drilling and directional-drilling utility software for reporting, well position, anti-collision, drilling fluid, and logging data.
- Planned and supervised on site an extended-reach research program: twenty-two wells drilled from a rectangular surface pattern to a subsurface ring, then a sixty-degree slant well with three close-pass horizontal wells, hitting targets despite setbacks in fluid composition, rheology, and prototype drilling techniques.
- Ran a gas-well surface-hole program in the Uintah Basin ahead of production rigs, with inclinations from under one to over forty degrees, high anti-collision risk, and complex well paths, on a tight schedule and within performance and safety metrics.
- Member of a mine-shaft freeze-wall project in Nevada: two rigs in close proximity drilling thirty-six wells in a ring at two-foot spacing, to be frozen and cemented as a barrier for shaft excavation.
- Led teams of two to four with varying schedules and skills, managing manpower and logistics; selected and managed the custom tools for each job: MWD and LWD tools, rotary steerable systems, bent motors, bits, and non-magnetic collar arrangements.
- Consulted regularly on drilling parameters and drilling fluids, and built no-notice reports for well engineers and site managers.
2004 – 2005 Rocky Mountains, USA
Rig hand Nabors Drilling
- Directional natural-gas wells in the Piceance Basin of western Colorado (rig 909).
- Rig-floor work with pipe tongs and slips; helped maintain drilling-fluid properties; general maintenance and operation of the rig's mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
